Category:World Travel and Tourism Council to check - TEMP

Back in April, you added over 800 photographs to the redlinked category Category:World Travel and Tourism Council to check - TEMP. It looks like most made it to Category:WTTC Global Summit 2022 which I guess was the proper category for them. Is there a need for the temporary category? Is there something more to check? Should they just be named Category:World Travel and Tourism Council to check or something else? Ricky81682 (talk) 22:52, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

@Ricky81682: I need to check them; it's now back on my to-do list. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:46, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Query about Category:John Cotton's Notebook

Hey pigsonthewing, why do you keep adding Category:John Cotton's Notebook to Category:New South Wales? It is, I think, fairly clearly a historical document and I don’t think it needs its own second level category from Category:New South Wales. Is there any reason you disagree? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 19:19, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

I'm unclear why you say I "keep" doing so,; when I reverted your removal of the category once. I see you subsequently moved it from that category to Category:History of New South Wales, which - while not ideal - is far better than your simple removal, given that the work is solely concerned with subjects sketched in New South Wales. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:19, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Apologies, no offence was intended by my wording. I do think the New South Wales category is too broad for most images. Thank you for your subsequent better categorisation. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 16:23, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Incidentally, I’m making a major push to get the Category:City of Liverpool, New South Wales photographed. My progress can be tracked via wikishootme. It’s why I stumbled onto the mess that is the New South Wales category. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 16:27, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

File:BT Tower, Birmingham.jpg

Hi, Pigsonthewing. You reverted my edit to File:BT Tower, Birmingham.jpg in which I removed the text "during routine operations". The source of the image doesn't say anything about the photo being taken during routine operations, so could you please explain why you want that text included? Thanks. MIDI (talk) 16:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

West Midlands Police open-licensed their images at my request; they asked that such wording be included to clarify that officers were not taking pictures for social media or Wikipedia while responding to emergencies. Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

Elizabeth Campbell

Hi, I couldn't find a definitive publishing notice on the title page, and also not in the Category:Sicily In the Year 1825 by Elizabeth Campbell. The book doesn't even seem to have ever been printed - so was it really created in the UK, or possibly in Italy? The year is obvious, but I'm in doubt whether this is a Category:1825 books from Italy or Category:1825 books from the United Kingdom. Did Campbell return from Italy in that year to bind the album in England, or did she stay in Europe? --Enyavar (talk) 19:54, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Who knows. UK seemed reasonable give her nationality, language used, and the fact that the book ended up in London. But Category:1825 books is available if you prefer. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:10, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

hi

Is this an airport in Birmingham?

hello can you tell me what I did wrong please, I'm new Bjc8996 (talk) 16:27, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

[moved from my talk page on en:Wikipedia]
@Bjc8996: Gladly, but please bear in mind this is Not your fault!
You have been using an app which asks you to "tag" images. But the app then adds what you suggest as tags using a statement called "depicts", which tells people and computers that the image "depicts" the subject of the tag. Obviously, as its name implies, "depicts" should only be used for things seen in the image, and as precisely as possible.
So, for instance, you added data to the image above, asserting that it depicts "airport", and "Birmingham".
Clearly, that's a nonsense, and unhelpful to the project. The app misleads people into doing it.
You can see discussion of this matter here, and in the 2020 discussions I linked to from the comment I posted there earlier today.
Thank you for your contributions, but I suggest you stop tagging and find another way to help. Or only tag what you can actually see in the image, as precisely as possible (so tag a picture of The Eiffel Tower as "Eiffel Tower" not "tower" and certainly not "Paris" or "France").
Do ask here if I can help you again, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:00, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Franklin Expedition Daguerreotypes

Delighted to find that that you have uploaded these images. Just a couple of questions:

  • is there a reason why the individuals are not named in the descriptions? Only some are identified indirectly as they are entered in name categories, where they exist.
  • The EngWP article notes that Daguerreotypes are normally mirror-images, though right-way images were possible. Perhaps that should be mentioned as the Sotheby's catalogue only notes, without explanation, that the ILN engravings are reversed. Asserting that these particular images are reversed might be considered OR (on the evidence of the Franklin portrait, the medals/decorations would have been worn on the left breast).

Davidships (talk) 11:30, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

@Davidships: I named and categorised those for whom I could determine the identity. If you can identify others, please do so!
If examination of the clothing etc. indicates the pictures are mirror images, I see no harm in mentioning that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:46, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. The IDs are in the source, so I will add them.
Regarding reverse imaging, only Franklin himself is obvious to me on account of the medals/decorations; I looked at the uniforms - although, of those that can be ascertained, the majority button with the persons apparent left over right, but there are a few the other way round. As dagerreotypes themselves cannot be manipulated ex-camera, that is curious - but my knowledge of uniforms and sartorial norms of the time is close to zero - there seem to be examples of both in Category:Historical uniforms of the Royal Navy. Novelty beer glass photo

If you happen to still own the novelty glass in this picture and you have the chance, could you possibly take another picture with a regular pint glass for scale? The gag effect of the glass is sort of lost when it's shown by itself with an ambiguous scale. I suppose it's not that important on the scale of things to improve on Wikimedia/pedia but I wanted to make the Breathalyser page a bit better, and the fact that's a UK gag is excellent for adding world perspective. Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

About Turnersuchus

Hi. You still haven't explained why we need two categories for this animal. —Trilletrollet [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:33, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

And you haven't said why you think we do not. The fact is, File:Turnersuchus model.jpg represents an instance of the species, and so should be categorised as such. This then requires a category at genus level, to link the species' category to that for its class. Furthermore, having one category at species level and another at genus level gives targets for interwiki links for those Wikipedias which have an article at species level, and for those that have an article at genus level. And doubly so for those that have representations at both levels, such as Wikidata and Wikispecies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:36, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

This work is to be found in the Council Chamber of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London. It was painted by their Senior Assistant Secretary, Reginald Main, from memory as they'd shared an office at the end of his life. I have an interest as I'm the artist's eldest son. Fred had studiously avoided the camera, so at the time it was painted, it was the only picture known. Subsequent examination discovered some photographs with him in the background, but by then the posthumous portrait was well established. IIRC the work was done between 1962-3, but I might be slightly out. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 51.183.175.111 (talk) 13:19, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Photo edits

Dear Pigsonthewing - why did you crop my image of John Craske? It is especially egregious to do this without asking my permission. I specifically used the photo that was provided to me for this purpose by descendants Trevor Craske. He wanted that image used because he owns the copyright as he took the photo. Now you have cropped it so that it looks like the one owned by Sheringham Museum. Please explain. Thank you, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:CarolynCo CarolynCo (talk) 12:20, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

@CarolynCo: It's not your image. I don't need your permission. The decision on what to include in Wikipedia does not belong to the descendents of the subject. If you wish to argue for retention of the uncropped version of the image on a Wikipedia article, you should do so the talk page of that article. As the image you uploaded is by another person, we need to confirm their permission for its use, per the guidance I have left on your talk page. If this is not received, it will be deleted. Finally, edits like [1] are nonsense. The image as cropped is a 1901 work by an unknown hand, and as such is no longer in copyright. Again, no permission for using the image is needed.
As to why I made a cropped version of the image: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an art project. It important, on the article about him, to show people what Craske looked like, not what a tatty paper photo mount looks like. Äntligen maj: Wiki Loves Earth 2024!

Förra årets vinnarbild i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

Alicia Fagerving (WMSE) (talk) 10:58, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

GLAM dashboard reports has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

According to your contributions, you added the "Category:Women wearing bikinis" category to many files on May 8th, 2024. However, I noticed the over-categorization problem when I categorized files in this category. Please look at these:

What exactly is this category supposed to represent? It has no parent categories, and I can't even tell whether it is intended as a topical category or (more likely, I would guess) a maintenance category. {{Wikidata Infobox}} for a file not linked from Wikidata doesn't tell me anything either. - Jmabel ! talk 21:33, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Sabotage

This edit of yours was referred to in the Edit Summary for this other edit as "the sabotage of my numbering" by Asclepias. Please don't do that.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:14, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

But it wasn't sabotage, and turned inaccessible manual numbering (Asclepias has been here long enough to know better then to use such) into accessible markup with exactly the same meaning. It is lamentable to see such an edit reverted. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:39, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
Hi Pigsonthewing, Frankly, that was no big deal, but it was mildly irritating and my edit comment was merely the equivalent of a friendly soft growl. I understand that the intention was not necessarily bad, although the actual consequence was indeed to break the organization and understandability of my comment. I agree with Jeff G.'s suggestion, please do not modify other users' comments to change them with your own ideas or preferences. It is not "lamentable" to see this change reverted. If my preference and habit of organizing some of my comments with a decimal numbering system and bullet marks really disturbs you that much, I suppose I might consider removing the numbers completely (leaving the bullet marks), but I disagree with your unilaterally changing the numbers and the logic with your different numbers, making the organization of the paragraphs illogical, absurd and incomprehensible. And no, I have no idea of what you mean when you say that users should "know better" than use numbers. It's not a secret that I'm not good at anything technical or with technical jargon. Please educate me. You are the first person who ever complained about this thing. But I am willing to learn. You might even convince me if that is something really important that users should know. Why writing numbers in comments is different or worse than writing letters and words? Why is the number "2.1" more "inaccessible" than, say, the word "pumpkin"? Is alphabetical or alphanumerical ordering, such as B) 1) a), also forbidden? Does the interdiction apply to discussion pages only? A link to an existing recommendation will be sufficient if that is already detailed somewhere. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:14, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
I did not "break the organization and understandability of your comment", and nor did I "change the numbers and the logic... making the organization of the paragraphs illogical, absurd and incomprehensible". I fixed its markup, leaving the content whole and its meaning unchanged. I hope you have prefect eyesight. Many of my friends and some of my relatives do not, and rely upon accessible markup. I always used to be confident of my eyesight, but having lost it in one eye, with an equal threat to the other, I'm on longer so sure. There are plenty of resources online that will answer your questions about how specific aspects of accessible (and semantic) markup work and why it is important on any web page. This is one of many results from a google search: [3]. For mediawiki markup, see en:WP:LISTGAP Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:05, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Mr Thomas Bolton's Natural History Discoveries - Nature - 1879 - 21 (526) 81–82.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{self|cc-zero}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

See Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/08/Category:Preschools. What's the actual difference between a nursery school and preschool besides the name? Adamant1 (talk) 16:29, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

I saw it; why two discussions were opened is not clear, nor is why one was closed without reference to the other. A nursery school is a school and the other is "before school"; i.e. not a school. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:39, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Yeah I don't know why there were two CfDs either. I actually wasn't aware there were two of them I closed the for preschools. It doesn't seem like anyone made a good argument for keeping the categories in the second one anyway though. I get your explanation to a degree but when I went through the categories as part of moving them a lot the Wikidata items, file names, descriptions, Etc. Etc. for the schools refer to them as preschools. So it seems like a distinction without a purpose. Even if it wasn't, Category:Nursery schools in the United Kingdom only contains a single subcat anyway. Are you really going to make an issue out of it because of one category? According to Wikidata it's a primary school even if the name has "nursery" in it. So I don't think it matters. Probably the category should just be renamed to Category:Great Barr Primary School. Then it would be a non-issue. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:27, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

As a minor detail, your attribution of Fred's portrait is that of your source, the original is in the Board Room of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London. The Artist was Reg Main, their Senior Assistant Secretary at the time (mid 1960s - he rose to become their Director of R&D by the end of his career. A draughtsman by training, he was Fred's last understudy, joining the Mechanicals on demobilisation in 1946, and was reluctantly persuaded to paint the portrait from memory, as it was discovered on his death that the old boy had studiously avoided the camera and no photos were known. That the painting captured his mentor's character is testified to by the subsequent recognition of him in the background of a number of photos of group social activities. It is sometimes surmised that this was the other way around, but I can affirm to the contrary, having been present throughout the work, in our living room at home: I'm Reg's oldest son. 90.207.93.204 01:55, 26 May 2025 (UTC)

Cropping advice

File:Native American woman known as Skak-Ish-Stin wearing Hudson's Bay Co blanket and labret in lower lip, Alaska, ca 1904 (NOWELL 85).jpeg is a historical photo with a lot of white space on each side. Do you think it would be okay to crop it? It looks to me like a scan that accidentally happened to include more than the original photo, but maybe I've missed something. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:54, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

Agreed. I've cropped to the edge of the original print. As that's an archival object, any further cropping should be done as a derivative. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:59, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

Non-free artwork - Black Sabbath

Heya, thanks for being eagle-eyed, but I assumed surely that Black Sabbath Boards.jpg would pass by Wikipedia's Non-free Content Policy. The "no free equivalent" doesn't apply here, as I took the photgraph myself. "Respect for commercial opportunities" is acknowledged here, as the photo doesn't impact the commercial viability of the original work. If the photo were closer, more centred with clearly legible text on the descriptions of each photo, or multiple photos showing all of the boards, as theres a lot of them (which would also break the third rule, "Minimal usage") then I would 100% understand, but the photo's are surely not high enough resolution to impact the artwork. Let me know if ive misunderstood anything, but as car as I can tell the photo falls completely within the non-free image policies.

I have replied on both this page and the image page, wasnt sure where was best, so feel free to ignore one. Jpdfive (talk) 20:06, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

That's a Wikipedia policy; this is Wikimedia Commons, and it does not apply here.
By all means upload the image at Wikipedia, with that non-free rationale. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:19, 30 July 2025 (UTC)

Hi Andy, you probably missed the discussion about the code update and the ban on the developer - so you need to copy the latest code to your subpage and do something along the lines of

if (mw.config.get('wgNamespaceNumber') === 6 && /SVG/i.test(mw.config.get('wgTitle').slice(-3)))
	importScript('User:Perhelion/simpleSVGcheck.js');
mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Shyamal/inat2commons.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

Hi. Am I misremembering or wasn't there a discussion awhile back about getting rid of the "cultural heritage monuments in Russia by id" categories that you filed a bot request related to or was that something else? --Adamant1 (talk) 04:43, 27 August 2025 (UTC)

Just an FYI since you didn't answer the question but I know it's something your interested in since you started the original conversation about it on the Village Pump but you might want to look over Template talk:Cultural Heritage Russia#Update on technical categories. Guidance needed to amend text entered in a template

Hello Andy, Would you be able to point me to a forum or appropriately experienced editor? I would like to globally edit some of the standard entered text in 1346 image files in the category "Uploaded by Htsa", which were all uploaded in an edit-athon more than 5 years ago (and subsequently the organizers have been unresponsive). They contain typos, coding errors and an incorrect licence. I am not seeking to change the template itself.

Two examples of the things I would like to clear up: the licence, currently a public domain declaration, needs to be a copyright-expired (age) statement. Another -- a fairly trivial typo but there are about 8 of them: against "Source" is the typo "The History Trust of South Australian...", the last word of which should be "South Australia". These typos are in each of the 1346 files.

I am confident editing and coding articles, but my knowledge of changing in bulk is zero. So although this does not involve editing a template itself, I thought that you might be able to nudge me in the right direction so I can be guided/checked by an appropriately experienced editor.
